Fatal Flaws of Automated Defibrillators

Cardiac arrest is a very scary and life-threatening situation to be in, for the most part, however, many malls, concert arenas, and areas with large amounts of people keep automated external defibrillators (AED) on hand. An AED will administer a process known as defibrillation, where it detects and diagnoses an individual in cardiac arrest and tries to restart or reregulate heart rhythm with an electric shock.An AED is called external because the operator applies the electrode pads to the bare chest of the victim, unlike internal defibrillators, which have electrodes surgically implanted inside the body of a patient. There are two main types of AEDs on the market today: semi-automatic and fully-automatic.Semi-automatic AEDs prompt the user to stand clear and then to push a shock button to defibrillate. Several units, which are fully automatic, do not require a button to be pushed, but rather a shock is delivered automatically after a stand clear voice prompts the user.AEDs can be found in corporate and governmental offices, shopping centers, airports, restaurants, hotels, sports stadiums, schools and universities, community centers, and other places where large groups of people gather and the risk of a sudden cardiac arrest incident is likely.
